Frequently Asked Questions:

  • How Do I Purchase a Custom Lamb?

We first star the process by collecting a non-refundable deposit. You can purchase the “Custom Lamb Deposit” for $100 in our online shop. This reserves your lamb. and protects both parties interests. We will reach out to you and collect custom cut instructions from you and make an appointment for you lamb at the butcher shop. The remainder of the purchase price is per pound based on the hang weight and includes butchering costs. This will be sent to you as a PayPal invoice and is due before you pick up the lamb from the butcher.

  • What is Hang Weight?

Hang weight is the weight of the animal after it’s been butchered and hung up to dry age, but before it’s been processed into cuts you would recognize from the grocery store. Each animal will lose more weight depending on how it is cut up. The weight of the prepared cuts that you are familiar with can vary widely based on how you choose to have them processed.

  • How much lamb should I buy?

You may purchase lamb as a whole, sample box (which is essentially a quarter lamb), or by the individual cut. How much you buy depends both on how large your family is and how much meat you eat! On average, a whole lamb will feed a family of 4 that eats lamb once a week, for about 6 months. Adjust up or down based on your family’s needs.

  • Why do you charge by hang weight?

When you buy wholesale, you are buying the entire animal and it is fully customizable. Charging by hang weight allows us to keep a consistent price for our customers. Hang weight is a standard measurement that is used across the industry to determine the cost of wholesale meat.

  • Can we come out to the farm to see the sheep?

We love visitors to the farm and are happy to show you around. Just remember this is not only our business, but also our home. So get ahold of us ahead of time to set up a time for your visit!

  • Grass-Fed, Pasture Raised, Grass-Finished....What's the Difference?

Pasture-raised implies that animals have spent a majority of their lives grazing on pasture. Most farmers use this interchangeably with Grass-fed. Almost all of animals destined for the food chain start their lives.

The difference comes when it’s time for “finishing”. This is the time that is usually the last month or so before going to market. Animals have finished growing and are putting on additional muscle and fat (this makes the meat tender). In a conventional operation, animals are supplemented with a high energy diet of grain in addition to any grazing or hay (grass in one form or another is an essential part of sheep’s diet - so all sheep with receive some grass or hay during finishing)

Animals that are grass finished, are not fed any supplemental grain. You could compare it to a body builder eating a high calorie diet to get big and buff for a competition vs someone who is eating a balanced diet to maintain their healthy weight.

Studies have shown that animals that are grass finished contain more heat-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, more conjugated linoleic acid, and more antioxidant vitamins than their grain-finished friends.
